Angelokastro, also known as the Castle of the Angels, strategically perches within close proximity to the village of Kreni. Archaeologists assert its construction in the 13th century. Dominating the landscape, Angelokastro captivates with its imposing gate.

It harbors countless relics from its era, alongside several storages of precious goods. Another intriguing sight is the remnants of an ancient church dedicated to the angels Gabriel and Michael, constructed within a cave.

Angelokastro, a vital fortified complex in Corfu, served as an acropolis overseeing the region all the way to the southern Adriatic. Together with the castles of Gardiki and Kassiopi, it formed a defensive triangle, safeguarding Corfu’s southern, northwest, and northeast fronts.

Despite enduring numerous sieges and attempts at conquest over the centuries, Angelokastro remained impregnable. Its strategic significance was evident during three Ottoman sieges, where it played a pivotal role in repelling invaders and protecting the island from pirate raids.

Constructed during the reigns of Michael I Komnenos and his son Michael II Komneno, Angelokastro not only provided refuge for local peasants during invasions but also saw active participation from villagers in its defense.
