Campiello, the oldest quarter of the town, extends from the Old Fortress and boasts typical Venetian-style architecture. Situated atop a rocky mound, it was favored by the affluent society for its healthier environment, benefiting from the sea breeze.
Characterized by narrow streets known as “candounia,” often featuring stairs, tall houses, churches, and small squares, Campiello underwent changes after the 1943 bombardment, resulting in more open spaces. Over time, Corfu’s old town expanded within its walls, giving rise to additional quarters with similar traits.
